$3,500 prize amount

Our Mission: To improve educational outcomes for Georgia’s highest at-risk student group

How do we accomplish it: By awarding the Colored Rocks Prize

What is the Colored Rocks Prize? The Prize is awarded annually to 15 senior male high school students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The Prize recognizes and awards these high achieving students who have committed to help at least one of their struggling peers achieve their high school diploma. Step-by-step, Colored Rocks are reversing the disturbing numbers of male students of color who become high school dropouts in Georgia.

Why the Colored Rocks Prize? One out of three struggles academically. Disturbing numbers are unemployed, in prison, on drugs, or teen parents. Negative media stories abound. These problems all link to the fact that this group does not achieve decent numbers of high school diplomas. In fact, male students of color are failing to graduate from high school in record numbers. We cannot allow one of our most valuable resources to falter. We need this resource to help us compete globally. We are pursuing the journey of increasing Georgia’s graduation rates among young men of color by awarding the Colored Rocks Prize.

Our Solution: We don’t have all the solutions. But we do have one. Our job is to recognize and highlight the accomplishments and promise of the high achievers in this group. We appreciate and inspire young black, yellow, red and brown guys. Guys who are confident leaders. We call them Colored Rocks.

Each year, a select group of 15 male students of color are awarded the Colored Rocks Prize. They then go out and inspire, appreciate and recognize other young black, yellow, red and brown guys and develop them into Colored Rocks.

What is the 2015 question?

All Prize Applicants must answer the following 2-part question to be considered for the 2015 Colored Rocks Prize:

PART 1.
What specifically is it about you that makes you a “Colored Rock” and how do you see yourself as a positive influence to other young men of color who need support, guidance and intervention as they face personal, academic or social challenges?

AND

PART 2.
How will you personally make an impact as a ‘Colored Rock’ among younger students at the middle school or elementary school levels? (By lending a helping hand to another student(s) of color who may be struggling or who needs inspiration, what will you do to help him excel and move closer to his potential to be a “Colored Rock”?)
Please note: Winners must execute and complete the project described and outlined in their answer prior to receiving their high school diploma, so please think carefully about your specific plan. Be sure to answer both questions prior to submitting your entry.
